2012 Water Conditions Report

As of mid February, the hydrological condition of the Kings River Basin, which is the District’s primary water supply source, is tracking well below normal. The snowpack is 33% of the year-to-date average and 26% of April 1st average. Allowing for the current hydrological conditions (50% of average), the District is anticipating receiving approximately 300,000 acre-feet of Kings River water entitlement this year, in addition to the 100,000 acre-feet of carryover in Pine Flat Reservoir from the 2011 water year for delivery this water season. This will assure a full four-month delivery water season. The projected full delivery period will be April 1st through July 31st; unofficial at this time.

The 2010 and 2011 Kings water years were well above average with 120% and 193% of normal respectively.  This enabled the District to carry over 100,000 acre-feet of water into the storage at Pine Flat Reservoir and be called on for this year’s deliveries.  During the 2010 and 2011 water years, the District was able to provide an eight month water delivery seasons from March 1st through October 31st. Total FID water diversions for the entire water years totaled 519,703 acre-feet in 2010 and 536,886 acre-feet in 2011.
